Adult Basic Education (ABE) & HiSET Preparation

Winter Classes Begin January 12, 2026

Adult Basic Education (ABE)
(Students 18 and Older)

Registration is required

This class is for students ages 18 and older who want a review of basic reading or math skills or who would like to prepare for the reading, writing, social studies, science and math portions of the High School Equivalency Exam (HiSET). Students may take an official practice test to gauge readiness, then take the official exam at Salem Continuing Education to achieve their High School Equivalency Certificate.  Class meets September through June.  Students must live or work in N.H. to register for this class. For students ages 16-18 still enrolled in school, see details below for the After School HiSET Preparation course.

  • Class meets on Monday and Wednesday (2x per week), 5:30-7:30 pm, Salem High School
  • Mondays: class focuses on Reading, Writing and Social Studies
  • Wednesdays: class focuses on Math and Science
  • Tuition: FREE, registration and pre-test required

Upon registration, you will be contacted by a staff member in the Continuing Education office to set up a meeting to discuss the course outline, your goals, and the expectations of the course.

New students to the program will be asked to take a placement test (Part 1 and Part 2) in reading and math.  This helps us to understand your current level.

Note: Remote testing requires Google Chrome. To download and install the latest version of the Chrome browser, go to Google Chrome.  The Placement test will not work on Safari, Firefox or Internet Explorer.

Winter Classes Begin January 5, 2026

After School HiSET Program
(Students 16-18)

Registration is required

The after school HiSET Program helps students (ages 16-18) prepare for their high school equivalency exams by providing academic support and individualized attention. Class also prepares students for the required practice tests, and assists students with setting up an ETS account and registering for the official exam.  Student enrollment is dependent upon practice test scores and a confirmed appointment for the official exam. Students must live in N.H. to register for this class.

The HiSET is a series of five tests in core subjects: Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading and Writing. Passing the tests confirms that a student has high school level academic skills and is able to pass the tests that are given to high school diploma graduates. Students ages 16-18 are required to receive a Prepared/Well Prepared on the practice tests before registering for the official exam.  Upon passing the official HiSET exams, students will be issued a High School Equivalency Test Certificate which is considered equivalent to a high school diploma.

  • Class meets in person on Monday and Wednesday (2x per week), 2:45-4:30 pm, Salem High School
  • Students must be live or work in N.H. to register.
  • Tuition: $100 (Salem students), $200 (non-Salem students)
  • Student enrollment is dependent upon practice test scores and a confirmed appointment for the official exam.
