Elementary Band and District Strings Programs
Here in Salem, we pride ourselves on a robust and well-supported performing arts program. We believe in the value of the arts and arts education and we work hard to ensure that all our students have access to this programming. Regardless of future plans, participating in the performing arts will allow students to develop a wealth of invaluable skills that will serve them throughout their lives. Learning to play a musical instrument in an ensemble like band or strings will help students with their perseverance, patience, self-discipline, understanding of their role within a group, collaboration, fine motor development, use of a symbolic system to generate meaning (music notation), exploration of creativity and humanity. This is the beginning of a lifelong musical journey and we are so excited for you to join us!

Program Information

Participating in a musical performing group is a great way for your child to experience the music program here in Salem. Playing an instrument is a hands-on, cooperative activity that is designed to use and build upon musical skills and concepts, as well as make connections to core curriculum. Band students will receive in-person instruction weekly.

The District Strings Program is open to all students in grades 3-12 who would like to play violin, viola, or cello. Strings instruction is offered during the school day every week in all buildings!

YES! These programs meet at different times and do not conflict.

YES! None of our elementary musical ensembles conflict with each other.

Our elementary instrument lessons are called "pull out" lessons because students will be pulled out of their classrooms once a week for their 40-minute group lesson. These lessons are scheduled differently in each building, so we cannot predict what your child may miss in their classroom. You may want to reach out to the classroom teacher if you have questions about what your child will miss while in instrument instruction.
