School Safety & Security

The Salem School District is committed to keeping staff and students safe and secure.

We do this by...

    • We hold regular meetings with local emergency management personnel to review and revise response procedures.
    • We have implemented multiple district-wide technologies to alert students and staff of emergency situations.
    • We have established communication protocols to alert the school community through multiple channels in response to various emergency scenarios and provide direction on next steps.
    • We have defined reunification plans should a school require evacuation.
    • All exterior doors and windows are locked during school hours.
    • All classrooms have lockable doors.
    • Each school has visitor screening capabilities.
    • Each school has internal and external security cameras.
    • All schools feature reinforced glass.
    • All staff have electronic IDs that control access to various buildings.
    • Rooms all have externally visible numbering to assist first responders.
    • We have multiple School Resource Officers within school buildings on a daily basis.
    • Local police and fire departments ensure a rapid response to all school facilities.
    • We invite police and fire department members to sit on our planning committees.
    • We have established “Run-Hide-Fight” procedures in response to building emergency situations.
    • We hold regular drills to practice these procedures and have defined gathering places if buildings need to be evacuated.
    • Each classroom has printed flyers reinforcing these protocols.
    • All staff receive 5 hours of training on potential health and wellness situations such as suicide prevention, anti-bullying, bloodborne pathogen treatment, and sexual harassment.
    • Each school has an on-site nurse and school counselor(s).
