English As A Second Language
Winter Classes Begin January 12, 2026
Registration is required for new students
The English for Speakers of Other Languages Program is designed for non-native speakers of English ages 18 plus and who are not enrolled in school. The instructional focus is on providing students the opportunity to speak, listen, read, and write English. Students will work at their own level and have multiple opportunities to practice their language skills.
English classes are free and open to New Hampshire residents or employees only. Registration and English proficiency assessments are required.

The Beginning English course is for those who have little to no experience using the English language. Students will practice communicating in English, and will develop basic speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills. Class will cover pronunciation and vocabulary acquisition skills.
Class meets Monday and Wednesday, 5:00-6:30 pm, Salem High School.

The High Beginning English course is for those who have some experience using the English language. Students will practice communicating in English, and will develop basic speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills. Class will cover pronunciation and vocabulary acquisition skills.
Class meets Monday and Wednesday, 5:00-6:30 pm, Salem High School.

The All Levels English course provides practice in English through listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities. Students will learn vocabulary and basic grammar, and increase their skills through topics that may include current events and personal interests.
Class meets Monday (remote) and Wednesday (in person at SHS), 9:30-11:30 am.

The Intermediate-Advanced English course will focus on English grammar forms and structures through listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities. Students will listen to oral stories and dialogues to learn conversation strategies, increase vocabulary, and learn paragraph structure.
Class meets Tuesdays and Thursday, 5:30-7:30 pm, Salem High.

- Upon registration, you will be contacted by a staff member in the Continuing Education office to discuss your goals and the expectations of the course.
- New students to the program will be asked to take a Reading Placement test (Part 1 and Part 2). This helps us to understand your current level and to place you in the best class.
- Once you complete the remote Reading Placement tests, you will receive information about accessing the class.
Note: Remote testing requires Google Chrome. To download and install the latest version of the Chrome browser, go to Google Chrome. The Placement test will not work on Safari, Firefox or Internet Explorer.
