In Salem's neighborhood elementary schools, small class sizes aren’t just a perk—they’re a powerful tool for personalized learning. Here, teachers have the time and space to connect with each child, guiding them through the early years of formal education with care and attention. But academic learning is just one part of the experience.
From recess and lunch to school assemblies and field days, students are welcomed into a vibrant school community where friendships are formed and memories are made. Special events, many hosted by the PTA, help students and families feel part of something larger from day one.
As students approach fifth grade, the focus shifts to preparing them for the next big adventure—moving on to Woodbury. With its larger classrooms, bigger student body, and new routines, the transition can be exciting and a little overwhelming. That’s where Steve Goyette and a dedicated strategic planning team come in.
Goyette, Humanities Director at Salem High School, is leading a district-wide effort to make sure students feel confident as they move from one school level to the next. “We already track academic progress across transitions,” he explains, “but now we’re focusing on how students feel about those changes—and how we can better support them through the process.”
The team is building on a strong foundation of existing efforts like move-up days, student orientations, and family info nights. Their goal? To strengthen the bridge between schools and make each step forward feel less like a leap.
Salem Superintendent Maura Palmer says this kind of intentional planning is central to the district’s strategic vision. “Much of this work is already happening,” she notes. “Now we’re sharpening our focus to ensure every initiative aligns with our district-wide goals.”
For Goyette, it all ties back to one core mission: Igniting and celebrating the passions of every student. By listening to families, learning from student feedback, and refining their approach, the district hopes to make every transition smoother—and every student more confident—on their path to success.
